Don't believe anyone... not even yourself

Don't take anyone's word for it. Believe nothing that hasn't been proven to you and that you understand from first principles.

Knowing how to do something doesn't necessarily make you an expert. If you have years of experience following someone else's rules and believing in their explanations without actually finding the truth for yourself, you cannot call yourself a true expert... all you are is a sheep that only knows how to repeat what it heard and never challenged.

This is also important when helping others find answers and gain mastery. The real teacher helps the student find the answers by himself. The real teacher steers without the student realizing it. The real teacher doesn't prescribe anything or teach anything. The real teacher helps the student find the answers by himself.
